Lobby wants education program

The NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby will ask the National Human Rights Consultation to consider education campaigns for the broader community to eradicate homophobia when it comes to town next month.

Lobby co-convenor Emily Gray said she was thrilled about the upcoming consultations because many challenges for the gay and lesbian community could be advanced by a human rights act.

This is a fantastic opportunity for us to set out how a human rights act would help protect the everyday rights of gay and lesbian Australians, she said.

Education campaigns will be one of five key points the Lobby plans to raise during the 17 March consultation hearings in Sydney.

The GLRL will [also] be emphasising the importance of marriage and civil unions for our community; the need to protect members of our community who will be affected by changes to social security laws; the need for adoption and surrogacy reform; and the need for legislation that protects gays and lesbians from being discriminated against in the workplace, in schools and in access to aged care facilities.
