Every job has its occupational challenges and during the making of Foxtel’s new series Out & About, covering gay and lesbian lifestyles and issues, presenter Marc Savoia discovered one such challenge.
While touring through Europe, one of Marc’s assignments was to interview nude sunbathers on beaches in Mykonos and lakeside in Berlin.
Unsure of the dress protocol for a reporter on a nude beach, and carrying a microphone in one hand and with a camera crew in tow, Marc decided it would be best to strip down to his swimwear and venture forth.
That was very interesting as I was never too sure where to look or how to approach them, he laughs. So there I was, wandering around on these beaches and leaning down to nude sunbathers asking, -˜Hello, do you want to be interviewed on camera?’ I knew it could be a little intrusive, but it had to be done for the story.
Not surprisingly, I had a lot of nos, but I also had a lot of people say yes. The whole thing felt a little bizarre.
During the shoot for the 13-episode gay and lesbian lifestyle series, Marc circled the globe, visiting such cities as Los Angeles, New York, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Athens, Mykonos and Hong Kong.
The Australian-produced Out & About on FOX 8 presents a magazine-style look at the influence of gay culture on modern life. Savoia is joined by fellow presenters Gabriel Opoku and Kate Monroe.
While the Out & About team hit clubs like Paris’s Le Queen on the Champs ?ys? and the beaches of Mykonos all in the name of work, Savoia says the pace of their filming schedules allowed little time to enjoy the party scene of the locations.
I rarely get time off when I am on the road, so visiting all those places is a bit of a tease, he says. I go to these places, have a look around, but I don’t get the opportunity to indulge, so I indulge as much as I can while we are working. It really is about the job with this as filming is pretty intense.
Out & About screens Tuesdays at 10:30pm on FOX8.
