Marvellous Mozart

Towering wigs, powdered faces, beauty spots, long ruffled coats and fancy frocks will be out in force in coming weeks for Amadeus Rocks You, a gala ball being held to kick off Mozart’s 250th birthday celebrations.

While 27 January marks the exact birthday of Austria’s most famous composer, Opera Foundation Australia and the Vienna State Opera Committee are getting into the party mood a few months early with the ball, to be held at Lowenbrau in the Rocks.

The party on Wednesday 14 September from 7pm promises to be a night of food, frocks and festivities, not to mention some of the best Bavarian wines available in town. There is also expected to be a parade of Mozart look-alikes, as the dress code for the occasion is -˜Period Costume’, with prizes for the best dressed.

Whether there will be attempts to reproduce the raucous, hyena-like Mozart laugh, made so famous by Tom Hulce in the 1983 Oscar-winning movie Amadeus, stands to be seen.

Entertainment will also be provided throughout the evening, with the fundraising getting into full swing with an auction and raffle.

Aside from being an excuse to drag out the campest finery and party into the night, Amadeus Rocks You is also an important fundraiser to assist in the development of young Australian Opera talent.

Proceeds from the ball will go towards sending an Australian singer to live in Vienna and study with the Vienna State Opera for four months. One Australian singer is sent every year, and some of the previous beneficiaries of the program include Emma Worthington-Lees, Joshua Bloom and John Cummins.
