The City of Melbourne plans to create a partnership register for same-sex couples.

Deputy lord mayor Gary Singer, who is openly gay, said the register would be largely symbolic but would help gay and lesbian couples show proof they were in a relationship

“This register will provide evidence of a relationship,” Singer said, The Age reported.

“It doesn’t have the legal status of marriage but it does provide some evidentiary basis in court for gay and lesbian couples.”
