Mixing politics and picnics

Mixing politics and picnics

Many in Sydney’s lesbian and gay community are preparing to mix politicking with picnicking this Sunday 16 February.

Large gay and lesbian crowds are expected at the Hyde Park peace rally at midday and throughout the day at the Mardi Gras fair day in Victoria Park.

Speakers at the rally include author John Pilger, actor John Howard and the first openly gay man elected to Australia’s federal parliament, Greens senator Bob Brown.

The Enola Gay group will lead a posse of peace supporters from the Broadway corner of Victoria Park to Hyde Park at 11:30am (via public transport). Fair Day spruikers will be reminding attendees about the rally, and a special stall will provide information to people wishing to learn more about the peace movement.

Following a survey of members, the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby this week added its voice to the other organisations encouraging community members to involve themselves in the peace rally.

We will be encouraging all members to come along to the rally to show that war is not the solution to international disputes, said Lobby co-convenor Somali Ghosh.

Historically we have seen that in times of war, governments tend to divert resources away from much needed social services, and restrict civil liberties, she said. This will impact on gay men and lesbians not only in our country, but throughout the world.
