New council cried in

It was with gusto that an official town crier bellowed out the names of the newly elected City of Sydney Council on Tuesday and declared the beginning of another four-year reign for Clover Moore.

After the final counting of preferences it was declared Moore had not only won her position as Mayor again, with a clear majority, but that her party had managed to increase its power, with five seats being awarded to Independent Team members John McInerney, Marcelle Hoff, Phillip Black, Di Tornai and Robert Kok.

The Greens were also major winners at the polls: both Chris Harris and Irene Doutney won places at the table, which left room for only one Liberal councillor, Shayne Mallard.

It was a crushing loss of power for Labor, winning only one seat for Meredith Burgmann in an area which had been considered a Labor stronghold.

The councillors were officially declared into their posts by City of Sydney Returning Officer Michael Nevin, who took the opportunity to congratulate Moore and offer commiserations to all those who had lost out at the polls.

The re-elected Mayor then took to the podium and thanked her team members and the City of Sydney staff for their continued work, as well as the voters who had continued to place their trust in her.

It gives us the endorsement to continue the momentum for positive change.
