No glitter or glamour at Woofclub

Get your fetish gear out of the closet because Woofclub dance parties and The Phoenix are getting dark and dirty for Mardi Gras.

For three nights from Wednesday 27 February until Friday 29 February the venue will be providing a place for the leather community in Australia and visitors from the rest of the world to meet, socialise and dance.

The Phoenix will get a semi-industrial makeover with rubber and pallets to give it a complete look.

“Phoenix Bar has always been a place for edgy events – things a bit off the beaten track to find a place to exist,” Woofclub organiser Steve Atkins said.

“It provides a place where independent organisers and promoters can come in and provide niche events to a community which has largely found it’s become quite mainstream and some might say lost its edge.

“As far as overall vibe, the nights will start off more as a bar with music at a level where the crowd can talk and socialise easily and then become a bit louder as the night progresses into a dance club.”

The event kicks off at 8pm each night and the dress code is strictly leather, rubber, fetish, or “durty”. The DJ line up includes Mandy Rollins, Shigeki, Rob Davis, Feisty, Mike Kelly and also Miss Eleni from Melbourne.

“I think people are naturally attracted to being individuals and I think leather for some people brings about a certain need to pull up your strength from inside, to dare to wear it when some people see it as quite foreign,” Atkins said.

“Speaking of foreign, in some countries it’s not regarded as a fetish because it’s worn as a practical material and there isn’t the judgment about it like there can be here.

“It’s a good chance to feel a sense of camaraderie, that they belong and importantly have fun.”
