Oh, brother

Oh, brother

What a year 2005 is already and, shit, it has only just started! It’s set to be a huge year for me personally.

As many of you know, I come from a big country family. Most live down in the little town that was dug, Nowra (it actually was dug, as it is situated in swamp area). One of my younger brothers, Matthew, has made the trek to the big smoke but has never made the bigger trek to one of my shows until last Monday night.

As he is only 20 years old and straight, I can understand his reluctance to come out with me. It was his birthday on Monday and after almost an hour of moaning and groaning, I finally convinced him to come down to Stonewall to have a complimentary beverage on me for his birthday. You’re on, he replied in his butch voice.

My first reaction was, shit, what have I done? I was as nervous as a fat man waiting for the buffet, filled with excitement but shitting myself that all the prawns would go before I got up there. After a Maxi Special stiff drink (thanks, Trudi) I slowly warmed up to the fact that I was officially coming out as a drag queen to my little brother. Yes, he already knew but had never seen me actually done up. As in many coming out stories, the only real problems were in my head. Will he like it, will he leave or will he want to touch my boobs? Oh, I was a mess.

And you may be asking what was my brother’s reaction as I swished over to him. Wow, you look good. You go, girl!
You what?

You go, girl, is all I got.

After warning him off that saying for life, I started to settle down a little. Later I found out that he was primarily there for all my drink tickets. It is such a buzz having someone in the audience that I grew up with, smiling and enjoying themselves as I jumped around like a fool. He even enjoyed the power ballad that I was performing to impress a boy I’d met. And he ended up drinking with the boy most of the night. So I know he loves the fact he has a drag queen brother -“ he pranced around the pub like he was a king, dropping my name to get free drinks. Little bastard! Now to try and get him to Mardi Gras -¦

EYESPY This Sunday is seeing a final episode once again of Polly’s Follies. The old girl is having her last show at the Exchange Hotel.
