Over the hill

Over the hill

I have hit the hill, it is here and all I have to do is face it and move on. I feels just like yesterday that I turned 18 and was off with my mother to the Ex-Servicemen’s Club in Nowra for a drink and a game on the pokies. And believe it or not the drink was only lemonade as I had not yet discovered the fun aspect of alcohol. How time flies! When you look back on all the stupid things you have done in your past, sometimes it is a miracle that you even made it at all. I feel like an old-timer, but really I think it was different back then. Was it easier to get away with stupid things 15 years ago? I can’t count how many times I had 12 friends in the car (four in the boot) driving home from a party -“ remember I didn’t drink back then -“ or walked home at 4am with no shoes and just PJs.

It is funny how the things that stand out in your past are usually the crazy spur-of-the-moment things. It was like yesterday when my flatmate and I decided to take a trip to the snow. We were poor uni students and had no money so we sold our $300 bicycles for $50 at Cash Converters and set off in her little Colt. It wasn’t until we hit the second hour of travelling that we realised that we had only one cassette and the radio was busted. The Bangles’ Manic Monday isn’t fun after six hours travelling, let me tell you.

Now it is time to contemplate what the hell I am doing with my life. On one side I have my mother saying, Are you going to be able to dress up for the rest of your life? and then I have jobs and clubs dropping like flies. Is the old woman right, am I going to have to get a real normal job? Whenever I get myself in a little tizzy I just think, what other career would let me perform at the closing of the Olympics, the opening of the Gay Games and even the opening show of this year’s Mardi Gras? Let’s face it, I am just one of the many men in dresses entertaining our community, but if I can put a smile on at least one person I have made the right choice and hope to be doing it another 30 years.

For all those who would like to celebrate my birthday with me, come along to Moulin Rouge in Kings Cross on this Friday 4 June at 10pm.

EYESPY
And another success for the Divastat-ed gang at the Shift last Friday night. With a few new faces and two new shows, they soon had the audience screaming for more. Keep your eye out for the new shining star, Stacii.

I was also able to catch the Venus Room show once again. Dirty Whores is fab and very hi-NRG. Freeda Corsett really shines in this show, dancing up a storm with grace and ease.

Message from the Convicts: they have won all games on the first day and have upset the favourites by beating them 17-3. And shock horror, the Bingham Cup functions are being hosted by a drag queen Rose Garden.
