The New Zealand partner of a Newtown icon Sonia Marra Nicholson, who died in a New York helicopter crash last week, has also passed away from her injuries.

Helen Tamaki’s official cause of death was listed as complications from near-drowning, according to the medical examiner’s office, US network NBC reported.

She died at 7pm Tuesday local time.

Nicholson, the former owner of Newtown’s Madam Fling Flongs/Soni’s Restaurant, died shortly after the sightseeing helicopter’s crash into New York’s East River.

She was celebrating her 40th birthday with Tamaki, her mother Harriet Nicholson and her stepfather Paul Nicholson.
