PM ‘hard-hearted’ for refusing gay marriage

While Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today expressed joy his son Nick is engaged to be married, not everyone is feeling quite so warm about the PM’s public outpouring of emotion.
Australian Marriage Equality spokesman Alex Greenwich said it was “hard-hearted” of Rudd to remain opposed to same-sex marriage and deny parents with gay children the same happiness.
“It’s hard-hearted of Mr Rudd to deny other parents the joy he says he feels about his son marrying,” Greenwich said.
“Australia’s failure to allow same-sex marriages means parents of gays and lesbians cannot see their children wed, or are forced to travel overseas to see it.
“If Mr Rudd truly values marriage as an important time for families, he will allow all families to share what he feels right now, including those families with gay and lesbian members.”
Rudd revealed the news on Twitter this morning saying he and wife Therese Rein were “over the moon” at the news.
Nick is set marry his girlfriend of three years, Zara, after proposing to her while overseas on Prague’s Charles Bridge.

  1. rudd is 1 man. and 1 man only you may have people out their who is telling him what to say i personally dont think its all him i think it’s politics you awalys get a follower. his just the man who gets the higher pay check and the man who cops all the bad luck. i also think next election he will loose. their are so many things he hasnt done in which he promised. look at obama in 6months he did what rudd hasnt done in like 2 years.. his a crap p/m and thats all their is to it.

  2. Perhaps we should take a leaf out of the wonderful Rev Fred Nile and Rev Phelps books and hold a rally outside the Church in which Rudd’s son gets married.

    Should go down well ;)

  3. I think Nic Rudd is political player and we should take note of what he does or does not do for the community.

He is the one who stands by his father each election showing support for him and his policies. He is a political player by his doing this. He does have a choice not to do this and keep out of political life.

Nic is a grown up and not a child. He should be treated like a grown up. No doubt he will help his father campaign yet again during this election.

  4. I don’t think it was wise to comment on the personal life of the PM’s son. It makes us out to be complete curmudgeons and Nicholas Rudd is not a politician and, as far as I know, not an opponent of same-sex marriage. Moreover, same-sex couples can have weddings. It’s just that the ceremony has no validity in law.

It’s better to focus on our own stories and highlight how gay couples are penalised because legislated marriage is not available to them.

  5. We in Sydney can’t vote against Rudd, as his electorate is in Queensland – but we can vote against Plibersek and Albanese, two Labor MPs in inner-city seats who have abjectly failed to support the voters in their electorate with their continued support for anti-gay legislation.

Show these condescending Labor MPs the door at the next federal election!

  6. Attacking the fact that Nick Rudd is about to Marry is “Gutter Politics” at its worst.

    Grow Up SSO !!!

Editor’s Note: Drew, perhaps you should read the story again. The paper isn’t attacking anyone … just reporting a point of view as is our job.

  7. How can you take this man seriously? He uses TWITTER for goodness sake!!!

I didn’t vote for him and will happily vote against him in the next election. Politicians need to move with the times…. it’s not 1930. People ARE gay and lesbian you know…. you can’t deny THEIR happiness because you think we still live in a 20th Century Convent.

    That is all.

  8. well if the same thing happens as to john howards daughter (she got divorced) then it will be karma on krudd…..
