Pride Week plans revealed

The Pride Week committee is calling for expressions of interest from individuals, groups and community organisations willing to participate in Pride Week 2002, which will run from 24 June to 30 June 2002.

Pride co-president Lou-Anne Lind told Sydney Star Observer that they were interested in hearing from anybody, regardless of the size of their project. Whether it’s low impact or a large-scale event, if you want to be part of Pride Week, we want to hear from you, Lind said.

Jude Bowler, who has previously worked with the AIDS Trust of Australia, OUT FM and was the artistic director of the 1996 Pride New Year’s Eve party, has been appointed as event coordinator. Bowler is
available to work with groups or individuals to develop proposals for the week of celebrations.

Pride Week commemorates the 1969 New York Stonewall Riots, which are celebrated internationally as the symbolic birth of the modern gay liberation movement. Pride Week 2002 is being organised by a coalition of groups which include The Pride Centre, The Aurora Group, the Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby, Team Sydney, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Community Publishing [the publishers of the Star] and ACON.

Lind told the Star that the focus of this year the event would be very rights-based.

We wanted to very much support the work of the [Gay & Lesbian Rights] Lobby in the lead-up to this year’s election, Lind said.

Lind added that Pride Week was particularly about community.

Whether you’re an artist or performer wanting to exhibit your work or an organisation looking to raise your profile and raise funds, it’s easy to get involved.

Expressions of interest should be sent to the Pride Centre by Monday 6 May. Registration forms are available from www.pridecentre.com.au or by calling the Pride Centre on 9332 1333.
