Putting their best foot forward

Since 2001 hundreds of same-sex and mixed couples have enjoyed the tutelage of Virginia Binning and David Rooney of DanceDance with Hot to Foxtrot.

Most Sunday afternoons you’ll find more than 30 dancers ranging from beginners to those obsessed with the sport.

DanceDance with Hot to Foxtrot conducted a come and try session at Team Sydney’s Sports Day OUT in October. It was great fun re-learning some basic Latin – the cha cha cha, samba and rumba. Ballroom, new vogue, freestyle Latin and Latin American styles are taught at the Sunday classes, including jive, barclay blues and salsa, adding to the great ballroom traditions of the waltz, tango, foxtrot and quickstep.

Many dance class participants come to learn the basics; then they are swept into the social activities and groups that form. It is hard not to meet people – especially when your hands are all over them for the duration of the class. As a fitness activity, dancesport encapsulates creativity with poise, balance and movement through various planes and effort levels.

Attending an event such as Dancesports at Melbourne Outgames on Saturday 2 February will be the catalyst for many who get caught up in the fever of competition and participation – not to mention the old world charm, creativity and artistic merit of dance.

If that is too much too soon, the Sports Festival Mardi Gras Dance Spectacular is being held on Saturday 23 February at the Botany RSL.

Local teacher and one of the judges of the event, David Rooney says, “We expect same-sex competitors and spectators to have the time of their lives in a G&L-friendly environment.”
