Red ribbon season begins

World AIDS Day was officially launched last Thursday at an event hosted by The Works creative agency on behalf of the AIDS Trust.

The red ribbon season was ushered in by AIDS Trust chief executive Nick Toonen. In front of around 50 people, he thanked corporate sponsors Foxtel and The Works before screening the public service announcement both organisations helped to create.

It’s very clear that HIV is still here and impacting on people globally, Toonen told the crowd before going on to say that if there was an Oscar for community service then The Works and Foxtel would deserve it.

Toonen was followed by a deeply touching presentation from former athlete Marlene Mathews-O’Shea, who features in this year’s print campaign.

She told of losing her son to an HIV illness, highlighting the need for continued support of Red Ribbon Day and HIV charities.

We only have memories to live with but you have the chance to give people life through your support, a tearful Mathews-O’Shea said.

Just a few weeks out before World AIDS Day on December 1, volunteers are still needed to sell ribbons and it is still possible to order a box of ribbons to sell at work.
