Ricky Martin: I’m gay

Ricky Martin: I’m gay

Ricky Martin has finally stopped denying the obvious and come out of the closet.

Writing on his blog yesterday, the sexy singer told the world he was gay and proud.

“I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man,” Martin wrote. “I am very blessed to be who I am.”

Martin became a father in 2008 to two boys thanks to a surrogate.

He said the birth of his sons had promoted him to come out to the world.

“If someone asked me today, ‘Ricky, what are you afraid of?’ I would answer ‘the blood that runs through the streets of countries at war…child slavery, terrorism…the cynicism of some people in positions of power, the misinterpretation of faith,’” he wrote.

“But fear of my truth? Not at all! On the contrary, It fills me with strength and courage. This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day.”

Now, how about playing Mardi Gras, ChillOut or Midsumma next year Ricky?

  1. Can we ask all our gay popstars to organise a gay benefit and protest concert for all our persecuted and abused fellow G+L’s in countries like Iran, most of africa including the horrendous Uganda etc etc.
Now that would be a nice gesture at least.

  2. Yes…this just makes me admire Matthew all the more. He could have been picking up sponsors all over the place but chose to be honest about and with himself instead. That said I can feel for Ricky or any other “Star” who are advised by their managers etc to live the lie…the same as one “star” who refused to discuss his sexuality in case it upset some of his Gay fans.

  3. Hopefully this prompts some Australian celebrities to come out. But I so wish they’d do a Matthew Mitcham and come out BEFORE or during their success, not 15 years after they have faded from the spotlight. If Matthew can do it, if all of us in our ordinary daily lives (without the millions) can do it, then why can’t they?

  4. Jimmy Sommerville gets a bit self-righteous about celebrities coming out after fame and fortune. But he has a point given he managed to be openly gay during the time he was selling heaps of records.

  5. you all seem so bitter! coming out is not easy, not for any one!give the guy a chance. you may like him, you may not, but you should do the right thing and support another man going through the comming out process, dont you think?

  6. Amazing how they wait until theyve made their millions, feel safe in their security shielded coccoon and then come out as Gay. Enough said.

  7. Im so sick of celebs coming out ONLY after the fame and all the money they make etc etc what even makes me more tick is that during there “peak” times in their career’s if they are asked about their sexuality they are always in denial about their homosexuality.

I think the next person to do a “Ricky” will be that idiot Robbie Williams! – watch this space for that!

  8. He used to have something going on. Or was I just sucked-in by the cheesy hunk-o-spunk-90s-archetype? Whatever the case, he’s a bit of a Nigel.

Sorry, Ricky. Good on you for being a fortunate homosexual man & all. But meh.

  9. Whatever Klinger was he was at least was open about it.
    I came out when I was 16.
    It didn’t wreck my career.
If some of you want Adam Lambert as your role model I can bloody damn well have a cross dressing heterosexual as mine.
Remember in the 70’s we only had Mash and a few other camp shows.

  10. You’re absolutely right HD- not only was the Maxwell Klinger character straight and wearing a dress to get kicked out of the army (he also confessed to being a communist and a serial killer to get the same effect without luck) but he married a Korean woman in the final series, and despite all the effort he spent trying to get out of the country, ended up staying in Korea to help her find her relatives in the final episode. There was a gay character in the original MASH movie which starred Donald Sutherland. But having Max Klinger as your gay role model is about as silly as having Sacha Baron Cohen as your gay role model.

  11. I would have prefered if he had of been out of the closet from the start, however its better late than never.

  12. “At least he was open about what he was doing.
    He wasn’t covert.”

I hate to break it you, Gary, but Klinger wasn’t actually gay either. Klinger wore women’s clothing in MASH in order to hoodwink the authorities into thinking he was gay and hence, discharge him from the army. It wasn’t much of a cunning plan. MASH actually ran for three times as long as the Korean War actually took.

  13. Not exactly out and proud at the height of his career. The truth was obviously a much scarier place back in the 1990s when the music was selling well.

  14. OMG
    It makes me larf…
The things people will say & do
Just To Get A Gig at the Mardi Gras Party!
Elton John,George Michael & Ricky Martin for the 3am show
All in Drag singing that Campy Old Tune from the Wizard Of Oz or better still “I Am What I Am!”
Now I Would Pay $150 to see that!

  15. I suppose Ricky Martin will now replace Adam Lambert as our new gay “role model”?
But like most “gay role models”our community want to look up too have lived a covert existence and contributed absolutely nothing to the gay rights struggle.
I may as well cling to my childhood “gay role model”.
He had a big nose and paraded around in a frock in the classic 70’s Mash.
At least he was open about what he was doing.
    He wasn’t covert.
