Rubbery figures

Fetish events are few and far between in Sydney these days, so news the Rubber Ball is being held this Mardi Gras has been greeted with great excitement.

Fetish events have kind of been left by the wayside. The last one was Fuck Fashion a few years ago, said Theresa from Reactor Rubberwear in Newtown. There’s men’s parties that happen and play parties, but that’s all.

The Rubber Ball and events like it are there to give people the opportunity to wear the outfits they love, and meet up with like minds and be dazzled by shows and people’s creative minds.

With a strictly enforced dress code of rubber, leather, kinky, drag, PVC, fantasy, fetish, body art, burlesque, medical, uniform, cyber and oriental, the event is certain to be a spectacle, to say the least.

There’s going to be huge amounts of fabulous and glamorous fashions, said Gail Kelly, who is organising the live shows and Skin Two fashion parade at the party.

Kelly, who most recently has been directing circuses, said Rubber Ball is one of the best things she’s been able to work on.

It’s so much good fun. The great thing about this is you get to let your imagination run wild. It will be a visual feast, really!

Dean Pearce of Demon Leather is one of the many people making costumes for the shows.

As possibly the most sought-after leather maker in Sydney (he worked on costumes for Moulin Rouge and created belts for Nicole Kidman to wear in the now-defunct Eucalyptus), Pearce has been inundated with work in the lead-up to Rubber Ball and Mardi Gras party.

Some of the popular looks we’ll be seeing this festival, he says, are guys wearing fireman boots with jocks and harness, as well as gladiator-style skirts.

A lot of the younger people are into military-style outfits.
But as usual with fetish wear, Pearce said absolutely anything goes.

I’ve been asked for everything at the moment, from classic chaps to space age kind of stuff, he said. Some people just want to wear an apron with their arse showing at the back.
