The people at Tennis Sydney want to make one thing clear – you don’t have to be the next Martina Navratilova or Roger Federer to join their sporting organisation.
The predominantly gay and lesbian tennis group is as much about social tennis as it is competitive tennis – and anyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun.
President Ben Alfred, who has been with the club for four years, said Tennis Sydney was a positive environment for anyone interested in the sport and a great place to foster friendships and improve skills.
“It is great for people who love playing tennis, but it also provides a good social outlet as well as a competitive outlet,” Alfred said.
“And it is inclusive of all levels.”
Tennis Sydney was set up in 1989 to provide a regular meeting place for gays and lesbians with a passion for the sport.
Since then it has diversified and now has members from all sexual orientations and all levels of skill.
Alfred said the group runs plenty of competitions throughout the year for those looking to pit their skills against others in a more serious environment, as well as at the weekly get-togethers.
There’s also the annual Mardi Gras Championship to get involved in each February, and recently members from the club have got involved in the Virginia Slims Tour.
Alfred said members of the team were now starting to turn their training attention to next year’s 1st Asia Pacific Outgames, to be held in Melbourne in January and February.
The Games are expected to draw about 1,000 competitors to the city from across the globe, and from a variety of different sports.
Social tennis takes place almost every Sunday at Parklands Tennis Centre at Moore Park, 1pm-5pm. Membership is $30 a year. Details: www.tennissydney.org.au.
