OPERA AND BURLEY GRIFFIN

Take a place designed by Walter Burley Griffin, add in some of the best artists from Opera Australia and the Conservatorium of Music, and have the troupe perform some favourites from opera and musical theatre repertoire. That’s the concept for the ConTension cabaret evening at the historic Haven Amphitheatre at Castlecrag on Saturday 14 April at 7:30pm. TROPICAL KARENINA

The winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for drama, the play Anna In The Tropics, opens 19 April at the Belvoir Street Theatre. Directed by Nicholas Papademetriou and starring Zo?arides and Dina Panozzo, the play by Nilo Cruz explores the impact the book Anna Karenina has on a group of factory workers in Florida in the months just before the Wall Street crash and the Great Depression. MAD HATTERS ON PARADE

There will be a parade of very mad hats on show at the Woolloomooloo Community Festival on Saturday 21 April at the Forbes Street Reserve. The community event kicks off from 11am, with a Mad Hatter’s Best Hat Competition, a pet show and a performance by the band Kingtide. More details are at www.woolloomooloofestival.org.au.

RANDOM ACTS OF BEAUTY

The photographic works of Sydney artist Lynne Roberts-Goodwin are in her new exhibition, Random Acts, which is now on display at the Sherman Galleries. The exhibition presents the beauty of the border areas of Jordan, and it is Roberts-Goodwin’s first solo exhibition since 2005’s Disappearing Act. More details are at www.shermangalleries.com.au.

BANKING ON SINGING TALENTS

It’s creative acoustic grooves at the Bank Hotel on the Wednesday girls night on 18 April, with the talents of Tammy Ingram, Alex McKinnon and Charmaine from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. Following the trio of singers is resident DJ Kelly Lynch spinning all the best tracks for the rest of the night. Wednesday nights at The Bank are listed as being for girls and their boys.
