The camp campaign for HIV kids

Laurell Honey, a.k.a. Patsy Leopard, Sydney’s favourite fag hag, is calling on the community to pull out their chequebooks and donate to Camp Goodtime.

Run through the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Camp Goodtime organises a series of camps for children living with HIV/AIDS and their carers. It is the only service in Australia to deal specifically with under 18s living with HIV, and they need money and volunteers.

There really is no one else like us, Honey, a Camp Goodtime volunteer and its loudest spokesperson, says.

These kids need this camp so they can have a place where they can be themselves because these children live in the underground and they live with a lot of shame.

Running four camps a year for kids in various age brackets and one major camp for kids of all ages and their carers, Camp Goodtime needs funds to provide services and transportation. They are also in need of volunteers to donate their time and services.

For these kids it’s a rare opportunity to just get away, have some fun, not feel so isolated and also get some information on the medical and social aspects of living with HIV, Honey said.

These kids really are a forgotten part of our community. When I start talking to people about these kids with HIV that I work with they always assume I’m talking about Africa. But these are Aussie kids and this is the next generation that we need to be helping.
