United in the fight for recognition

Openly gay ACT MP Andrew Barr and the Campaign for Civil Unions will hold a rally this Saturday to show support for the proposed relationship recognition scheme hasn’t been diminished by Federal Government pressure.

A flier sent to ACT gay and lesbian residents by CCU organisers said the fight was a moral one, and was critical of Kevin Rudd’s appeasement of the Christian Right over the issue.

While the federal Labor government is more supportive of gay rights than the previous Liberal government, they remain opposed to the civil unions bill the ACT Labor government is promoting, the flier stated.

Namely, that the ceremonial aspects have too much in common with heterosexual marriage, a fact which Attorney-General Robert McClelland deems -˜inappropriate’.

ACT AIDS Action Council is also behind the territory’s efforts.

We’re very supportive of the ACT Government standing firm on its proposal. We wish for there to be no compromise, AAAC general manager Andrew Burry said.

ACT gay lobby group Good Process is conducting a survey of community expectations to determine its campaigning priorities. The survey can be found at http://apollo.anu.edu.au/default.asp?pid=2684
