Uniting Church leaders create rival assembly

Uniting Church conservatives have decided not to leave the church over the issue of gay ministers, but will instead set up their own assembly.

Earlier this week Evangelical leaders threatened to split from the Church after it voted not to stop ordaining gay and lesbian ministers.

But Uniting Church president, Reverend Gregor Henderson, questioned the legality of creating a new assembly.

“On face value this proposal seems to suggest establishing a series of parallel structures within the Uniting Church,”
