U.S. politicians back gay hate crime bill

The federal US House of Representatives has passed a bill that would extend hate crime protection to gay, lesbian and transgender people, something the House has blocked for years.

The bill must next be passed by the Senate, which has backed similar legislation in the past.

The bill extends existing hate crime laws which already cover crimes motivated by race, colour, nationality and religion.
