Weir dismisses ‘Aussie gentlemen’

While the Sydney Star Observer awaits official comment from Channel 9, US figure skating champion Johnny Weir has dismissed comments made by Winter Olympic commentators Eddie McGuire and Mick Molloy this week.

Weir’s agent Tara Modlin told www.crikey.com that Weir was more concerned with his attempt to win Olympic gold than the opinion of “two gentlemen from Australia”.

“Johnny doesn’t appreciate comments like that. He will be going for gold tonight and doesn’t really care what two gentlemen from Australia think,” Modlin told Crikey.

“He’s focusing right now on his free skating and his triple axels.

“They clearly have some sort of affection towards his outfit. Johnny’s very knowledgeable about fashion, his costume shows his personality, and that’s what the costumes are meant to do out on the ice.”

Modlin also told the website that Weir was sick of the constant media speculation over his sexuality: “…people don’t ask Christian Aguilera, if she’s gay or straight so why are they talking about Johnny?”

SSO has made multiple attempts to seek comment from Channel 9, but without success.

  1. As an Australian male I am absolutely appalled at the comments made by these two ignorant, minor has-been ‘celebrities’. Unfortunately, they are simply unacceptable. Having a network in the football mafia is insufficient qualification for a sports commentator. That person must also love sport and respct all athletes. These guys have failed the respect test. For Channel 9 to give buffons like this oxygen on the public airwaves is extremely disappointing…………………….

  2. Agreed Mr Scott, with a watermelon sized dildo shoved up his arse whilst being told to shut the fuck up.

  3. Did anyone hear James Brayshaw on the weekend, making comments about men cuddling up together during one of the track events? This is so embarrassing, and Nine will have to pay for this at some point. Is it too late to put a float in the Mardi Gras about the Nine Boofheads and their work during the Winter Olympics?

  4. “Two gentlemen from Australia?!” Hang on, aren’t we talking about Eddie McGuire and Mick Molloy here?

  5. As an Australian, I would like to apologize to Johnny Weir and all who took offence to the comments made by Eddie McGuire and Mick Molloy. The comments of these two are not an indication of my country. They are simply the comments of two low class, unfunny individuals who make stupidity a virtue. Their humour (if it can be called that)is based on the derision of others. Go Johnny, you are a better man than these two clowns will ever be.

  6. “No Openly gay athlete will be allowed to win a medal ever.’

He’s not ‘openly gay’ at all. He steadfastly refuses to discuss his sexuality.

  7. “I thought I was watching the womens figure skating. This guy really had me fooled!”

Don’t take the piss, Johnny deserves lot of respect for being who he is, and not hiding his sexuality like some gay people who are ashamed of who they are.

  8. I don’t think the judges sent a message that if you are gay you “can’t win a medal ever!!” The guy who won gold is as gay as a handbag full of rainbows! No, Johnny Weir(d) failed becoz he believes *everyone* loves how off his nut he is. Well, wakeup call Johnny, you failed becoz you are a pain in the butt. Anyone who ponces around like an idiot is simply that, regardless of sexual orientation.

  9. says it all about the ex Packer Nine Network, full of a*hole meatheads like Eddie & Sam Oldwoman & their premier show for the year is about grose violence & stand-over, says it all realy. I would much prefer the costume flambouyance, skating skill & trim physique of Jonny than Jabba chin Eddie & the other oaf. Just goes to show how stupid & desperate 9 execs are to pay this twick millions

  10. Go Johnny Go !!! I cant stand that Eddie McGuire he is nothing more than a C.U.B. (Cashed Up Bogan) with a nasty homphobic tone.

    Shame Ch 9.

  11. As an Australian male I am absolutely appalled at the comments made by these two ignorant, minor has-been ‘celebrities’. Unfortunately, the commercial network probably won’t do anything about it because ratings must come first and the seem to like appealing to the ignorant, uneducated and unfeeling segment of Australian society. I apologize on behalf of my country and wish Johnny all the best in the competition.

  12. It’s one thing cracking butch jokes in jock change-rooms; it’s quite another on national television. The underlying attitudes and beliefs are not humorous – they are simply unacceptable. Having a network in the football mafia is insufficient qualification for a sports commentator. That person must also love sport and respct all athletes. These guys have failed the respect test. For Channel 9 to give buffons like this oxygen on the public airwaves is extremely disappointing.

  13. The Judges message is clear:No Openly gay athlete will be allowed to win a medal ever.
So if u have children who are interested in this sport and they happen t be gay forget it u just wasted your life and theirs because you have no chance of winning if you do not stay in the closet.
What a great message to the world the olympic judges have sent.

What the olympic judges did last night was tell everyone that if your openly gay you have no chance in figure skating… they sent a message ….why would anyone in their right mind put their child in this sport, spend hundreds of thousands of dollars training them and dedicate their life to it when if you happen to be gay you will not win no matter what.
Can anyone please explain to the public who watched the mens figure skating how Johnny Weir was scored loweer than:
    * DAISUKE TAKAHASHI (Japan, Bronze Medal) Takahashi fell on his first jump in the program, a quad attempt, and landed squarely on his ass. I mean that literally. He slid on his ass for what seemed like an eternity, got up, and finished a program that otherwise had the same degree of difficulty as Weir. His scores were so inflated that NBC cameras actually caught him reacting with shock, not entirely pleasant, that he had scored as highly as he did despite a bad fall and other errors.

    * STEPHANE LAMBIEL (Switzerland, 4th Place) Lambiel bobbled nearly every landing and mailed in all his other elements. The crowd seemed to drift off into sleep as Lambiel nearly missed jumps, stumbled from one element to another, and skated in slow motion.

    * PATRICK CHAN (Canada, 5th Place) In addition to a fall, Chan’s performance was all over the place. It was unfocused, sloppy, and he couldn’t seem to hit anything right. The commentators were full of excuses for Chan: he’s injured, he changed coaches, he’s too young. He wasn’t too young, however, when he won Silver in the World Championships last March.

    Ridiculous.
Why would anyone follow the figure skating sport or become involved when performance is not rewarded but image and behind the scenes deals are.
