It’s not very often you come across a book aimed at young readers that features queer characters. That’s one reason why Alasdair Duncan, 21, was inspired to write his critically acclaimed debut novel Sushi Central, about a 16-year-old gay guy living in Brisbane.

“When I was 16 or 17, there were no gay-themed books aimed at people my age that I could find,” Duncan said. “There was just nothing else out there.”
