Online payment company PayPal has pledged its support for marriage equality, promising to match donations made to the yes campaign.

The company hopes its support will help secure a win for the ‘yes’ vote, Gay Star News has reported.

PayPal’s Australian small and medium business director Brian McDonnell said supporting marriage equality was a “social responsibility” for businesses in Australia.

“If you look at tech companies like Microsoft and, locally, Atlassian, they are actively advocating in the same way as PayPal that the result of this survey should be a ‘yes’ and marriage equality should exist for Australians,” McDonnell said.

“Every person in Australia, and broadly around the world, has technology in their pocket every single day and that is a driving force in itself. That really creates a platform to get broad distribution about a critical issue.

“This is not about marriage. It’s actually about equality before the law.”

The company is matching individual donations of up to $250, up to a total of $50,000.

Donations can be made online.

Voting in the marriage equality postal survey is open until November 7, with results to be announced the following week.

  1. Just want to mention that I work at Atlassian – I love that we’re loud about equality. You should see us internally, we printed tshirts for everyone too – and not just here, in the US too. When prop 8 was overturned (the equivalent of the shite we’re going through here) we planted rainbow Easter eggs in Bitbucket when code was checked in, and printed rainbow t’s for everyone. It’s not lipservice. If you have a diverse team you are a much much much better one as a result.

However, I just wanted to point out that it’s not just us and PayPal. Every company that puts up a yes sign is just as great, it doesn’t have to be rainbows on buildings. I’d love to see something about where others work, big and small, and the support they are giving. All of it counts. Help us show it.
