JOY goes into fundraising overdrive

The annual JOY 94.9 membership drive kicks off today with a 10-day radiothon packed full of events to follow.

Each year the community radio staion holds the 10-day festival to celebrate the station’s achievements and to encourage people to join or renew as members.

This year’s theme is Choose JOY with participants told to think ’80s power pop, big hair, leg warmers, leopardskin outfits and plenty of fluro colours.

It begins with tonight’s launch party at the Glasshouse Hotel which will include circus and burlesque performers as well as local entertainers, DJs and special guests Paris Wells, Dolly Diamond and Luke Gallagher.

The festival will then run from June 11-20.

Station manager Danae Gibson told Southern Star it took a major effort from many hard-working volunteers to get the radiothon off the ground every year.

“We start planning as soon as the Midsumma Festival finishes,” she said.

“It takes about three months and the efforts of our 250 volunteers to manage things like staffing phones and doing mail-outs.”

Among the other highlights planned over the 10 days is the Breakfast Club event, where community members are encouraged to come and tour the station’s Bourke St headquarters, have breakfast with its volunteers and hopefully sign up to be a JOY member.

Organisers have set the target of 2000 new memberships during the 10 days this year.

“All our usual guests will be part of it, and it’s mostly about people having a fun time, not just raising awareness of memberships and how we operate,” Gibson said.

“The radiothon accounts for between a third and a half of our yearly budget so it’s a crucial part of our fundraising efforts.”
