Labor Senator to speak at Sydney rally

Labor Senator Doug Cameron will address a November 27 marriage equality rally at the Sydney Town Hall.

Senator Cameron recently spoke out against his party’s opposition to same-sex marriage and is one of a number of Labor Left figures who have been pushing for a reversal in the Government’s position since a factional meeting last month.

Following the meeting the Senator told Fairfax papers there would be a “huge push” for a change in the Government’s policy at the next Federal conference of the ALP.

The rally, organised by Community Action Against Homophobia, will also hear from the National Vice President of the Community and Public Sector Union, Lisa Newman, and Wear It Purple Day coordinator Katherine Hudson.

CAAH Sydney Co-convenor Ben Cooper said he was very excited to have Senator Cameron speaking at the rally.
“Having Labor leaders such as Doug Cameron speak out in such a public way puts the Prime Minister under further pressure to introduce legislation that grants equal marriage rights,” said Cooper.

“We strongly encourage people to join Doug Cameron at our upcoming demonstration and by doing so help us make it clear to Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott that we demand an end to the ban on our right to marry.”

The rally is on Saturday November 27 at Town Hall, from 1pm.
