The ALSO Awards are fast approaching and nominations are already flying in for the 22 top gongs up for grabs.
ALSO CEO Crusader Hillis told Southern Star with the awards less than six weeks away, ALSO had already been flooded with nominations.
“It’s been a remarkable reaction already and it’s only been a couple of days, so it’s really shaping up to be a really well contested field of entries,” he said.
“If there’s a group or individual you want to nominate, you’d better get in quick.”
Hillis said close to 100 nominations were received in the first 48 hours after the polls opened.
Nominations are open until midnight, May 30, with voting to start in early June.
The line-up for the pink carpet event on June 28 at St Kilda’s National Theatre is also gradually being announced.
Categories for awards this year include Most Outstanding Campaign or Initiative; Most Significant Activist; Most Significant Straight Supporter; Outstanding Volunteer; Popular Venue; Best Drag King and Queen; Youth Achievement; and new awards for Outstanding Health Initiative and Health Hero’.
Emerging Indigenous performer Kamahi Djordan King, aka Constantina Bush, will hit the awards stage after completing a season at the national Dreaming Festival.
Bush – who is inspired by former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice – will put on a cabaret dance spectacular with Sydney-based back-up dancers Cecelia Geissler and Junita Duncan to form Constantina Bush and the Bushettes.
King is from Katherine in the Northern Territory and performs in English and Myall, the local pidgin English dialect.
Dolly Diamond and Luke Gallagher have also confirmed for the event and sure to send ripples of laughter through the crowd.
The night is set to be a sparkling event on the Melbourne queer calendar and tickets are now on sale.
The ALSO Awards fall in line with the ALSO Foundation’s 30th anniversary this year.
