Marriage talks

Former South African Constitutional Court judge and author Albie Sachs gave a talk on same-sex marriage last week in Melbourne. Sachs was instrumental in the South African court decision to overturn the exclusive status of marriage as only between a man and a woman.

A respected human rights champion, Sachs developed South Africa’s Bill of Rights. He lost his sight and and arm in a bomb attack while in exile in Mozambique in 1988 after defending people charged under apartheid laws.

Sachs’ new book The Strange Alchemy of Life and Law is out now. The talk was presented by the Human Rights Law Resource Centre.
