Sex Party registered

The Australian Sex Party was officially registered as a political party last week.

The Australian Electoral Commission overruled a handful of objections, including one that the party’s name could be deemed obscene under Section 129 of the Federal Electoral Act.

The party, which counts same-sex marriage equality among its policies, will be run by a committee of elected members from the Eros Association, Australia’s national adult retail and entertainment association.

After some hiccups recruiting the 500 members needed to qualify for registration, the party is now preparing for the next federal election.

The Australian Sex Party will look at running mostly female candidates for Federal Parliament with a focus on Senate seats.

-œOne of the reasons for establishing the party was to provide a positive platform for sexual issues amongst the negative notions of sex that most politicians and political parties have, Sex Party convenor Fiona Patten said.
