Top prize pool for Lotus Awards

Now in it’s 17th year, the Lotus Awards — celebrating Melbourne’s gay Asian community — are on again in October.

With prizes valued at more than $12,000, this year’s competition is set to be the most lucrative yet, with four holidays up for grabs, cash and costume prizes.

Contestants have a chance to compete in four categories including Miss Lotus for queen of Asian drag and ladyboys; Mr Lotus for most popular Asian gay guy; Mr Rice Queen for most popular Asian-friendly Causasian guy; as well as the Fried Rice competition for best Asian entertainment act.

It will be the second year the Commercial Rd venue Heaven’s Door will run the event. The Lotus Awards previously called the now defunct Opium Den/Star Hotel in Abbotsford home.

Heaven’s Door also hosts a weekly Asian night, Lotus Night, every Wednesday.

The awards will start on October 6 with the first round of heats.

Registration is now open to enter the awards. For details visit the Heaven’s Door website or Facebook page.
