Pride business awards selling out

Pride in Diversity has been bowled over by the response fron major employers to the inaugural Pride in Diversity Luncheon and Awards, which will take place on May 17.

The awards are the product of Pride in Diversity’s creation of the first ever GLBT Australian Workplace Equality Index, with the top 10 employers to be named on the day.

Pride in Diversity program director Dawn Hough told the Star Observer that four weeks out from the event there were 10 people on a waiting list for just four individual tickets left, while the only table left was one with limited visibility of the speakers on which discount seats were available.

“Its just been phenomenal,” Hough said. “We had no idea we would sell out so fast, and it’s not just been employers who are Pride and Diversity members, it’s also been organisations that are not even members and some that haven’t participated in the Equality Index so there is obviously a huge appetite for this which is fantastic for our community.

“It shows that employers are really keen on looking at this area of diversity practice which is something that can often get left off the agenda. We’ve been blown away by the support so next year we’re going to go bigger.”

Hough said that while the attention at the Awards would be on the top 10 employers for GLBT people, the Equality Index was also important for organisations just starting the journey of supporting GLBTs in their workplaces by giving them year by year benchmarks for their progress.

“It’s not just about celebrating the best-practice organisations, it’s also about those organisations that are actively working towards more inclusion for our community,” Hough said.
