Queen’s Ball turns 50

Queen’s Ball turns 50

People heading north in June for the Brisbane Pride Festival will have a chance to take part in what many believe is the longest-running gay and lesbian event anywhere in the world — the Queen’s Birthday Ball Awards.

Founded in 1961 by Brisbane drag identity Dame Sybil Von Thorndyke, this year the ball celebrates 50 years.

To celebrate the golden anniversary, the ball will be held at one of Brisbane’s most iconic venues, Cloudland in Fortitude Valley, on Sunday, June 12 from 6pm.

The ball will feature shows from some of Queensland’s premier drag performers including Dame Sybil Von Thorndyke, and will see the presentation of 12 awards voted by the general public for outstanding achievements in the GLBTI community.

Gold is the evening’s theme and party-goers are encouraged to dress to impress. There will be awards for best costumes, including ‘Belle of the Ball’ and ‘Themed Group in Costume’. The party will continue into the night with DJs after the award presentations.

A table of 10 can be booked for between $400 to $500 depending on location and availability and includes two bottles of champagne and canapés. Tables are limited and will not last long. Individual tickets are $30 online plus a booking fee or $30 at the door or through venues including Brisbane’s Sportsman and Wickham hotels and Klub Kruise.
