London newcomer Rox is another cut from the Amy Winehouse cloth — tasteful retro-soul arrangements abound on Memoirs. Thankfully, Rox knows her way around a classic melody, and backed by the production nous of Al Shux (the maverick behind Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind), her debut has more than a handful of great cuts. Check out My Baby Left Me, with its bleak lyrics married to an incongruously sunny song, or the reggae-influenced Rocksteady, with its nod to Rox’s Jamaican heritage.
