Running at the front of the pack
Did you see that red and black singlet race by? Last Sunday morning over 25 Sydney Frontrunners entered the SMH half-marathon and there were some outstanding results.
More than 8500 started the 21.1km race around the city and the Domain under near-perfect weather conditions.
Matt Webster flew around the course in 75m 32s, followed by Damien O’Brien 87m 58s and Dennis Johnson 88m 03s. Matt won the 8km Sri Chinmoy race the previous week.
Club coach Wayne Morgan said he was proud of the runners’ achievements.
No matter if they were in the faster group or up the back of the pack, all the Frontrunners did a great job over a difficult course, he said.
Many runners were placed in the top 30 percent of the field and any run coach would be impressed with that result.
But our back of the pack runners performed so well too -” many were doing their first half-marathon and it takes a significant amount of grunt to get through all 21kms.
And we have to thank the cheer squad around the course Â-” it was fun to hear support most of the way around the city.
Just under a third of the club’s membership finished the run. Things will slow down until the next challenge comes along. For some, that will be the World Masters in October and for a handful it will be a short rest until the Gold Coast half in early July.
