Phelps is the head of hate group Westboro Baptist Church, notorious for picketing the funerals of dead soldiers, disaster and terrorism victims and various celebrities with signs claiming their deaths are God’s retribution for the United States’ acceptance of homosexuality.
The Satanic Temple held the admittedly made-up “Pink Mass” at Phelps’ mothers’ grave-site in Mississippi, with church spokesperson Lucien Greaves donning a horned headdress and presiding over the ritual.
Greaves oversaw three same-sex couples recite scripture, light candles and make out over the grave. At the ritual’s conclusion attendees posthumously declared Phelps’ mother Catherine Johnston a lesbian.
“Our right to believe that Fred Phelps now must believe that his mother is gay is inviolable…no one can question our beliefs,” said Greaves.
The Temple explained apparent after-effects of the Pink Mass in a statement.
“Other same sex couples are invited to respectfully and tastefully express their mutual affection at Ms. Johnston’s gravesite,” they said.
“After a Pink Mass has been performed, every time a same sex couple kisses over the gravesite, the now-gay deceased is said to be pleasured in the afterlife.”
Westboro Baptist Church responded to the ritual, with a spokesperson saying it only fuelled their desire to preach against gay people.
