Sit down, fat lady

Sit down, fat lady

Billy Kennedy

Have you ever been involved in a sport, whether playing or watching, and you were sure your team was going to lose before the end of the game?

At some point we have all been there, and if you are one of the few who hasn’t, it will happen.
It’s hard to keep playing or cheering when you just cannot see a way back, but should we really give up all hope? Or are we kidding ourselves in thinking that the last minute of a game can really wipe out the previous 89 minutes of hurt and misery?

Having watched and played various sports all my life I speak from experience when I say some of the best moments of your sporting life will come when you score that crucial point in the final seconds of the game against all odds.

It happens at all levels of competition. For those soccer fans in our community think back to how you felt during the final two minutes of the 1999 Champions League Final when Manchester United broke the hearts of every German (OK, all the ones from Munich) with two injury time goals to seal a come-from-behind 2-1 win to lift the biggest trophy in club soccer.

As a diehard red I can honestly say in my head I thought we had lost, although my heart said otherwise.

If you are not a fan of soccer or Manchester United think back to the most exciting moment of your life and times it by 100. It’s this feeling we crave that means we never give up hope.

If you have never experienced this feeling I encourage you to never give up. Stay in your seat until that final whistle blows, cheering as loudly as you would if your team were leading by 40 points. Or continue to give every ounce of your energy to help your team score that vital point until the ref blows the final whistle and you feel you could give no more.

The best managers in the world will tell you in order to be the best you must leave everything you have out on the pitch/court.

So the next time someone tells you the fat lady is singing, tell yourself sit down fat lady -” you only sing when I let you
