It’s been a big month, with things happening all over the state and more events to get geared up for in the near future!
Hume Phoenix, in partnership with Queer Screen and ACON Illawarra, recently hosted a community screening in Albury of My Queer Career 2008 -” a collection of short films shown at this year’s Mardi Gras Film Festival. The event was a great success, with a sold-out session and a great community atmosphere. ACON Illawarra is looking to host a similar event in Wollongong in the near future, so stay tuned for details to make sure you don’t miss out!
UNITY Social group has also just had their regular dance party which was themed White Hot Disco, at which ACON’s new You Just Don’t Know campaign generated a lot of interest. If you missed the last dance, be sure to put the next one into your diary. The theme is Red and will be a fundraiser for World AIDS Day, held on the 30th November in Wollongong. Put down the event on your to-do list and stay tuned for more details closer to the date.
Something not so far away to get ready for is our Rainbow Party fundraiser and community BBQ coming up on Saturday 23 August. Held at midday at the ACON Illawarra Community Space, members from all our local social and support groups should be there for an interesting and fun afternoon. Call Michael at ACON for more details.
After a disrupted few weeks, Rainbow ConneXions will be returning with a special catch-up games night on Friday 25 July, before resuming the regular meeting schedule from 1 August. Rainbow ConneXions is a mixed group for those aged 18-30 and meets fortnightly from 7pm at the ACON Illawarra Community Space.
For those 18 and under with a creative streak and something to say, there is an upcoming series of zine-making workshops running from 30 July to 10 September at Wollongong Youth Centre from 3.30-5.30pm each Wednesday. Those interested should contact Alison at the Youth Centre on 4226 5969 or Andre at ACON Illawarra.
WAGS (Wollongong Area Gays), our local over 30 men’s group, has some interesting activities coming up over the next few months including a karaoke night, where the guys are going to parade their singing and dancing talents -” it should make for an interesting evening!
