Baseballer’s gay slur bites back

A major league baseball player for the Toronto Blue Jays has been reprimanded for donning decorated eye-black featuring a gay slur during an on-field appearance at the weekend.

Shortstop Yunel Escobar is facing a three-game suspension and the donation of his lost salary to two LGBT organisations after wearing the standard eye black with the Spanish words “Tu Ere Maricon” or “You are a faggot”, written on them.

In a press conference earlier this week Escobar said he had nothing against homosexuals.

“I have friends that are gay… It’s just something that’s been said amongst the Latinos. It’s not something that’s meant to be offensive,” he said.

As a result of the crude sentiment, Escobar will be made to donate his lost salary to anti-defamation groups GLAAD and You Can Play, as well as undergoing sensitivity training within his three game suspension.
