Big year ahead for Bats

The Flying Bats Football Club were the crowned winners for Northwest Sydney Women’s Football Division Two league last year and will join the league’s top division this year.

The Bats, Australia’s top lesbian football club, also had two teams make the championship rounds last season.

The club will be taking on some of Sydney’s best Division One teams, home to ex-state and national players, this year and will be focusing on their top team.

Flying Bats president Alicia Rich said the bats would be training hard this year.

“It’s a huge honour to be invited into division one, and we want to do our community proud,” Rich said.

The new side will have a dedicated, accredited coach and extra training. Commitment to the team and its goals is a must, she said.

“We always play hard at the Bats and this year we’ll be training hard too.”

The Bats, which is the largest club of its kind in the world, will be holding open tryouts for its Division One squad on February 3 to give hopefuls from all clubs and backgrounds the chance to show the Bats what they’ve got.

FBFC is a Newtown-based football club catering to all skill levels and all walks of life. It fields six teams from beginners to elite level including an over-35s side.

Division One tryouts will be held at Tempe Reserve, Holbeach Ave Tempe from 2-4pm on Sunday February 3. Pre-season training begins on February 5, 7pm at the same place.
