Lesbian group revives yoga, football

Brisbane’s Lesbian Health Action Group (LHAG) has announced plans for another yoga course for same-sex attracted women and a season of lesbian touch football.

Following its annual survey at International Lesbian Day 2011, LHAG found that women wanted to learn more about mental health, especially relaxation, stress management and anxiety.

As a result, LHAG has partnered with Earth Awakening to create a safe and welcoming space for same-sex attracted women to learn yoga.

Yoga for Lesbians had 112 women attending the first six weeks, and organisers had trouble fitting everyone in.

“It was really amazing to see the number of women who attended,” LHAG volunteer Sally Morris said.

“This really surprised us at how popular this activity was. This showed us that women in our community are looking for spaces and opportunities to improve their health and wellbeing, and LHAG will continue to support them to do this.”

Another six-week yoga course for same-sex attracted women starts on May 10 at Earth Awakening. The cost is $10 per session.

LHAG’s Lestouch, a regular touch football event for same-sex attracted women, kicked off again on April 20 at Yeronga Memorial Park and will be held every second Sunday from 3.30pm. It’s a free event.
