Melbourne’s lesbian tennis training team will take to the court for a sweat-laden social event as part of the Midsumma Festival, hoping it will raise awareness of the successful team and maybe even net them a few more members.

Ace Girls was formed after Melbourne women achieved a record medal tally in tennis at the Sydney Gay Games in 2002 and has gone on to garner quite the reputation for achievement in the sport.

“We’ve got some really nice games going, the players are maturing and it’s a great way to incorporate fitness into your social schedule,” Ace Girls coach TJ told the Star Observer.

“We’ve been really successful on a local, national and international level.”

The women’s tennis night on January 31 is presented by the Queer Sports Alliance Melbourne (QSAM), and all you need to bring is a racquet. Dinner at The Pumphouse Hotel will follow the tennis session.

All standards are welcome — from beginners to advanced — but TJ said players will need that fighting spirit.
“We’re a pretty competitive team, so some tennis skill is useful,” she said.

This year’s event follows a highly successful 2010 for the team which saw them once again reign supreme at the Pink Sofa Cup tennis tournament in November and also send off a team of 12 to the Gay Games in Cologne.

Their capacity to field big teams of skilled female players will continue into the new year as they send 18 to the Shepparton Grass Court Open.

The Ace Girls Tennis event is at Carlton Gardens Tennis Club on Monday, January 31 from 7pm. It costs $10 to participate. Details from [email protected]
