LGBTI athletes from across the globe are meeting in Darwin this week for the third Asia Pacific Outgames.
Events kicked off with Saturday night’s opening ceremony at Gardens Oval in the Top End city with Lord Mayor of Darwin, Katrina Fong-Lim, giving the games her seal of approval as an official bearer of the Outgames rainbow torch.
Organisers say athletes have come from all across Australia and the Asia Pacific including countries such as Canada and Japan.
The overarching theme of the Asia Pacific Outgames is ‘Strength through Togetherness’ and official competition sports including track and field soccer, dragon boat racing and dance sports.
The games continue until May 16.
Here the Star Observer provide you with a taster of the Outgames opening ceremony which was presided over by ABC Darwin’s Lisa Pellegrino and Sky News Darwin bureau chief Daniel Bourchier, and included a Welcome to Country from an elder of the Larrakia nation.
