Sporty summer

There’s plenty going on in the world of GLBTI sport in Sydney over summer as Mardi Gras season kicks off next month.

The annual Sports Village at Fair Day on February 20 is the perfect opportunity to see what Sydney has to offer in a range of GLBTI-friendly sports clubs for the serious player to the enthusiastic beginner.

Team Sydney president Geoff Radford told the Star Observer 24 stalls featuring different sports groups will be on show for people to peruse on the day.

“We encourage people to come out and about and play,” he said.

“Join nearly 2000 gays and lesbians who play sport each week and [enjoy] a healthy lifestyle.”

A range of sports demonstrations will also take place including marital arts, wrestling, salsa and volleyball.

The Sports Village makes up part of Team Sydney’s Sports Festival which is run as part of the Mardi Gras program during February and March.

Radford said this year’s Sports Festival is set to be the biggest yet, with a range of events taking place.

Some highlights include the Mardi Gras sailing regatta on waters north of the beautiful Rushcutters Bay on February 26; the Amazon Women’s Tennis Social  Day on March 6, for those too shy to pick up a racquet the rest of the year; Bentstix pink hockey championships on February 26; and for something different, dragon boat racing with GLBT-friendly dragon boat club Different Strokes  hitting the water for some fierce paddling on February 22.

For those interested in checking out all the sports events on offer, the festival guide is out now.
