Stingers mark ten years

Sydney’s gay water polo team, the Stingers, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary as a competitive team. Started by a group of friends in 2001 who wanted to get a team together for the Gay Games, the Stingers now has 60 members and 800 Facebook fans, with strong community support at social events and games.

The anniversary coincides with the start of the 26-week summer playing season and a members’ bootcamp. The season will help prepare the club’s two teams, Stingers Black and Stingers Red, for the forthcoming World Out Games in Antwerp, Belgium in July 2013.

Stingers spokesman Russ Plummer said the team was about inclusiveness and creating a friendly environment for people to learn and play water polo while socialising.

“We are looking forward to the competitive year ahead and representing Sydney on the world stage,” Plummer said

“Our 10 year milestone will be a birthday celebration like no other and we look forward to celebrating our birthday year with family, friend’s fans and the support of our … diverse community.”
