Stingers take on Surge

An interstate grudge match between gay water polo club rivals Sydney Stingers and the Melbourne Surge is on this weekend.

The two clubs will go head-to-head at the South Yarra Sports Centre on Saturday, January 22 with two competitions on the night — the Cup Match and the DTs Trophy Match.

Sydney Stingers Trophy team captain said he believes the northerners will face some tough competition.

“Despite some very close results, Surge has held the upper hand when it comes to competition between the two clubs in recent years, and coming off their silver medal at the Gay Games in Cologne last year they will certainly be hard to beat,” he said.

Stingers Cup team captain Mark Eagleson said Sydney’s prospects are good.

“With more than 20 players heading to Melbourne for the weekend, it’s also an opportunity for some of our newer guys to compete against the Surge for the first time, and we’re hoping our Cup side will also do well.”

M said he believes the sport is gradually gaining strength in the gay community with the Stingers seeing a growth in club membership and interest over the last year.

For those attending the matches, a players’ warm-up starts at 6pm with the Cup Match scheduled for 6.20pm and the DTs Trophy Match at 7.40pm.

The matches will take place at the South Yarra Sports Centre, 679 Chapel St, South Yarra.
