Toy Soldiers set to get muddy

Try something different this Mardi Gras and prepare yourself for a muddy adventure race and dance party in the park, marking the start of the 2013 festival.  The Toy Soldiers Mud Run will be held on Sunday, February 17 from 9am-6pm at Cataract Park, which is just one hour south of Sydney.

Starting at 9am and running throughout the day, the main event is a 5km run through bushland, army style obstacles and, of course, it involves a lot of mud. The race will also have an army-themed dress code and can be walked, jogged or run, with entrants allowed to choose their preferred starting time.

Event organiser Julia Kish said the idea behind the mud run was to provide something that gave more options than the usual late night inner city dance party.

“We want to put on an event for Mardi Gras that caters for everyone. We are mixing the sports and health scene, with the art, music and party scene and bringing the GLBT communities together,” she said.
“Mud runs have become very popular and I think it’s because they appeal to the adventurous side in all of us. They allow us to get grubby and have fun without having to explain why and they bring a great sense of achievement when you finally cross that finish line.”

There will also be a dance party in the park running throughout the day with popular Sydney funk and house DJs Dan Murphy, Sista P and Yazzimoto. There will be prizes for race winners and best-dressed soldiers and there will be food and beverages on sale. There will be a free bus service running to and from Campbelltown train station every hour and parking available.

Tickets are available for the race but if you don’t want to run, you can also purchase a party-only ticket.
