Warm up with Frontrunners

Warm up with Frontrunners

With only a month to go until the City2Surf, Sydney’s — and indeed the world’s — largest fun run, many Sydneysiders who’ve signed up for the 14km run on a whim will probably be looking for some last-minute encouragement in the chilly winter weeks ahead.

Thankfully, the Sydney Frontrunners gay and lesbian running group continues to train, come rain or shine, all year. Join some of their weekly sessions if you’re in training for the City2Surf, or just want to keep your fitness levels up through the year in a friendly, social queer environment.

On Monday evenings from 6.30pm, the Frontrunners hold squad training in tandem with their friends at AE fun runners, meeting at Centennial Park’s Lang Rd Gates. Take part in this popular squad session with a trainer for $5 — just remember to bring some water and wear light-coloured gear. The group usually goes for a meal afterwards in Surry Hills.

On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, the Frontrunners hold track running sessions at the Sydney Athletic Field, Boronia St, Kensington from 6pm.

But the most popular and best runs for the uninitiated are those the Frontrunners hold each weekend. Less experienced runners can opt for a relatively easy run around Centennial Park from 9am on Saturdays. It’s mainly flat, except for a slide upward gradient in the last kilometre, and should take runners between 25 and 40 minutes.

More experienced runners can join the 12km run to Bronte Beach and back. It’s a more challenging course, with some hills and usually takes 55 – 75 minutes. It starts at 8am from Centennial Park.

In preparation for the City2Surf and its infamous ‘Heartbreak Hill’ climb out of Rose Bay — an incline that has knocked the stuffing out of many a well-trained runner — the Frontrunners will lead a 10km run around Rose Bay’s hills each Saturday morning from 8am, leaving and returning from the Rose Bay shops.

The Frontrunners also hold occasional Sunday runs. Email [email protected] for details.
