Start up shot for soccer beginners

Taking up any new sport can be daunting, but soccer in particular can be a hard one to envisage yourself playing. Fancy foot work and all of that ducking and weaving has too much potential to end in embarrassing disaster.

But if you’re keen to get fit and work towards your Ronaldo dreams, the Rangers Football Club can help, with plans to start a beginners social comp.

Club president Gavin Ward anticipates the new game will begin in July and will provide an entry point for newbies to turn up, learn some skills and progress to the mainstream social game or even competition.

We’ve probably had a dozen or so people who have come along to the Sunday social game over the past month, who have drifted away because they weren’t good enough, or felt they were out of their depth, he explained.

It’s hard to get everyone else to scale back their game to accommodate a few beginners on any given day. So what we’d like to do is set aside one or two Sundays a month, where beginners know they can come along, and can know they will have enough people to have their own game.

We want the beginners to be able to build up their own game without feeling overruled. We’ll have someone watching and coaching and helping them as well.

Starting dates and times will be announced once enough interest has been registered.

  1. What a fantastic idea! I don’t think any other lgbti sports clubs are holding beginners initiatives. Good on you Rangers! I am a beginner and interested in getting fitter, but wasn’t involved in team sports in high school (always picked last like other gay men) I’ll be there and thanks for this new health initiative : )
