Step up and register

It’s just under a month until the much-anticipated return of the softball season. More than 150 players registered with the Outfielders last year, so there’s sure to be a number of eager players lining up on 12 October to sign up and have a hit at the social game, which will be held at this year’s Sports Out Day.

Registration will open at 11am on the day and run until 3pm, but for those unable to make it to this year’s Sports Day Out there will be another opportunity to join the Outfielders on 14 October at the Fox and Lion Hotel from 6pm. It is also possible to register online at www.sydneyoutfielders.org.au.

Club president Jappe Wouters said he is hoping to see as many new and old faces as possible at the registration days.

This season we are hoping to have 11 teams play in the competition -” that is over 160 players, he told Sydney Star Observer. The competition is open to both men and women and is all-inclusive.

Wouters said any newcomers to the sport or people who have not played since school would be welcome with open arms.

We’re hoping that the social game at the Sports Day Out might get some new people interested in playing softball this summer, he said.

They can come and have a hit and see what they think. It really doesn’t matter how good people are, this competition is open to all levels.

We will be organising a couple of training sessions on a Sunday once the season starts, for new players and others who wish to fine-tune their skills.

Group media officer Faycal Benabdellaziz said organisers are working hard to make this the biggest and most successful season in the club’s 10-year history.

We intend to make this the most successful season for Sydney Outfielders, which would be fitting with the celebratory factor of 10 years in existence, he said.

We want to continue encouraging the gay and lesbian community, including transgender and bisexual people, to participate in both the competitive and non-competitive aspects of being a part of this softball group.

There is a sense of togetherness, fun and support our players offer each other, both on and off the field.
